Bendalls Engineering, a division of Carr’s Engineering, part of Carr’s Milling Industries, designs and manufactures specialist steel fabrications and assembles electromechanical equipment for industries from petrochemicals to the nuclear sector. It’s engineer-to-order, so design input is almost always the starting point, and management systems have to operate with very little in the way of standard products or subassemblies, no BoMs (bills of materials), no demand forecasts and so on. Nevertheless, aware of the urgent need to improve key aspects of its business, Bendalls initially embarked on implementing a relatively standard business system covering manufacturing, purchasing and accounts – only to find that it was unsuitable for engineer-to-order
