Mobile computing for production improvement is on a growth curve, with the latest to sign for significant investment including DaimlerChrysler and Coca Cola, both of which have gone for systems from Symbol.
Daimler Chrysler has gone for Symbol’s MC9000 ruggedised mobile computers and its wireless Mobility Services Platform (MSP) to cut costs and improve the capture and management of data at various stages of production, initially at its Kassel plant in Germany.
All applications are directly connected to DaimlerChrysler’s SAP Automotive system via the Mobisys Solution Builder, a SAP-certified add-on. Meanwhile MSP will deal with deploying, managing and maintaining the network, with full remote access.
It’s a similar story at for Coca Cola Hellenic Bottling, although in this case, it’s taking 6,000 mobile computers for sales, delivery and maintenance staff, again to improve productivity and operational efficiency but also customer service.
Here, Symbol has provided four customised versions of MC9000 to handle functions like tracking outlet sales history, inventory levels, product profitability and promotions. They will also be used to ensure that merchandising is as per contracts and promotions, and assist delivery teams with route planning and accounting.
