Survey finds smaller firms accelerated Windows 7 plans

SMEs have been accelerating their plans to migrate to Windows 7, following the operating system's launch last year, according to a report by free social business application developer Spiceworks. The company surveyed more than 1,500 IT professionals during the first two weeks of October and the last two weeks of November 2009 and found a 20% increase in the number of SMEs planning to speed up their adoption rates of Windows 7, after the announcement.
Plans to start upgrades 'immediately' and 'in the next 90 days' increased by 10% respectively post-launch – with IT professionals at the smallest firms (sub 20 employees) most aggressive in their upgrade plans.
More than 40% of respondents said they plan to start upgrading within the first 90 days post-launch. That was more than double the rate for organisations with more than 20 employees.
The findings differ from past behaviours among this market segment, which is historically slower to adopt new operating systems – with reasons given including speed (73%), user interface (69%) and switch from the current OS (57%).
