Operations management software to add competitive edge to biopharma plant 16/02/2009

manufacturing business software Global biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) has selected Emerson Process Management to automate its new Large-Scale Cell Culture (LSCC) production facility in Devens, Massachusetts, USA.

The company has specified Emerson’s PlantWeb digital plant architecture, including the new Syncade smart operations management suite, DeltaV digital process automation system and a network of intelligent digital field devices.

BMS says it expects Emerson’s modular Syncade software to help achieve operational efficiencies and optimisation. It will manage electronic workflow to reduce deviations, expedite batch review and release, and improve real-time inventory management.

The organisation also makes the point that everything will use industry and corporate standards to enable technology transfer and quick response to change. That also enables integration of real-time plant floor information with ERP-managed processes – seen as central to achieving competitive advantage at the new facility.

In brief detail, operations management is to use Syncade for workflow processes including monitoring and controlling fully automated equipment, electronic work instructions, equipment status tracking, recipe driven operations, material tracking, automated weigh and dispense operations, electronic data capture, exception reporting, and the integration of operations workflow with ERP.
