Volvo speaks its mind with Zetes multi-mode systems 10/11/2008

Volvo Car says it expects to reduce picking errors in both its warehouse and production environments when it goes live with new voice technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The company has signed a deal with European supplier Zetes to deliver its 3iV Crystal voice solution, optimised for voice applications on both dedicated equipment and multimode processes using generic industrial handhelds.

One project involves a voice-dedicated application to be installed in Volvo’s warehouse, handling spare parts for Volvo workshops all over Europe. Zetes systems will be integrated with Volvo’s WMS system, with the local partner providing 110 voice terminals.

The second, production project is for a voice-assisted application, where voice will be combined with barcode scanning on 30 terminals. Volvo says it will allow easy entry of operators’ IDs and, eventually, enable them to get information about the picked products on their screens.

Says Alain Wirtz, Zetes CEO: “These important projects at Volvo Car perfectly illustrate the advantages a company can get … by combining voice dedicated and voice assisted or multi-modal applications.

It also highlights the fact that the choice between voice dedicated and multimodal applications strongly depends on the project requirements.”
