Open source project management launched 09/08/2007

The public beta of OpenProj, an open source desktop version of Microsoft Project, is now being beta tested at some 400 sites with 5,000 seats, according to developer Projity.

It’s and available on Linux, Unix, Mac or Windows, and Projity says that it offers an opportunity for project managers to save the $1,000 license fee for Microsoft Project.

“The Projity team has received tremendous feedback from key industry leaders who are already using OpenProj to satisfy their desktop needs,” says Marc O’Brien, CEO of Projity.

“We have been working on this launch for a while… OpenProj’s familiar user interface and ability to open existing native Microsoft files make migrating both free and seamless.”

“Projity’s release of OpenProj is an important addition to the open source marketplace,” comments Larry Augustin, SourceForge founder and venture capitalist. “The project management area now has a full equivalent to the commercial software market. OpenProj is a terrific addition for users of OpenOffice and other open source solutions.”
